Intensive human migration in the 21st century has become a challenge for persons and societies inyolyed in Ianguage education of foreigners and has rendered it necessary to adjust teaching materials and methods to the needs of immigrants.
My child is going to school. The Polish-English Phrasebook has been created for the parents whose children will attend or already attend primary schools in Poland. The phrasebook proyides practical help for those parents and guardians who do not speak Polish language well enough to effectiyely communicate in situations related to the child's functioning in an educational institution.
This book is the first teaching aid in the publishing market targeted at foreign parents. It satisfies their unique linguistic needs and emphasizes the elements related to the reality of liying in Poland. The information included in "The Phrasebook" concerns the Polish education system, the school working practices in Poland and the organisation of the school year, and will proye helpful to the readers in the process of proyiding equal educational opportunities, as well as in the process ofintegration.
The content of The Phrasebook includes the vocabulary material selected based on the analysis of linguistic needs of the parents (immigrants) of the primary school children, as well as on the analysis of the opinions ofteachers working with foreign children in the first grade of primary school. The yocabulary content and form of The Phrasebook were influenced by the answers, eyaluations and suggestions regarding the problems in communication in Polish at school, provided by both researched groups - parents and teachers. The expressions inciuded in The Phrasebook can be found in authentic materials: school documentation, student grade records, materlals regarding chlid health, school websites, announcements, guides published by schools and regional education authorities, offers of community clubs, cinemas, theatres and trayel agencies, as well as the publications of governmental organisations.
The content of The Phrasebook based on those materials may help to enrich the courses in general Polish and diversify its activities, as well as support the cooperation of the school and pedagogicał staff with the foreign parents and children.
The first part of The Phrasebook - "World" and "Human" - contains the expressions useful in everyday communication. The content of the next parts - "Child" and "Home" - is more specific and comprises the vocabulary related to the child. The parts dedicated to the topic of school are the most comprehensive and "specialised". They comprise two big sections. The first one includes the vocabulary of education in a broad sense, the other discusses the communicative situations that a parent or a guardian may face at school and in its environment.
Readers will find in The Phrasebook not only single words and expressions, but also entire sentences. The most needed and usefuł expressions haye been presented in a clear and easily legible way and divided into logical sections, which facilitates effective communication in Polish.
The Phrasebook has been prepared in four language versions: Polish-English, Polish-Vietnamese, Polish-Chinese and Polish-Russian version.
